Development Of A Semi-Swath Craft For Malaysian Waters

    Get PDF
Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull (SWATH) and Catamaran vessels are known to have more stable platform as compared to mono-hulls. A further advantage of SWATH as compared to Catamaran is its smaller waterplane area that provides better seakeeping qualities. However, the significant drawback of the SWATH vessel is when encountering head-sea at high forward speed. Due to its low stiffness, it has a tendency for large pitch motions. Consequently, this may lead to excessive trim or even deck wetness. This phenomenon will not only degrade the comfortability but also results in structural damage with greater safety risks. In this research a modified SWATH design is proposed. The proposed design concept represents a combination of Catamaran and SWATH vessel hull features that will lead to reduce in bow-diving but still maintains good seakeeping capabilities. This is then called the Semi- SWATH vessel. In addition, the full-design of this vessel has been equipped by fixed fore fins and controllable aft fins attached on each lower hull. In the development of controllable aft fins, the PID controller system was applied to obtain an optimal vessel’s ride performance at speeds of 15 (medium) and 20 (high) knots. In this research work, the seakeeping performance of Semi-SWATH vessel was evaluated using time-domain simulation approach. The effect of fin stabilizer on the bare hull performance is considered. The validity of numerical evaluation was then compared with model experiments carried out in the Towing Tank at Marine Technology Laboratory, UTM. It is shown that the Semi-SWATH vessel with controllable fin stabilizer can have significantly reduction by about 42.57% of heave motion and 48.80% of pitch motion

Human growth hormone (hGH) is secreted from the anterior pituitary gland and exerts a wide variety of functions such as, IGF-1 production, protein synthesis, glucose metabolism, lipolysis, lipogenesis, and cell proliferation/differentiation (Isaksson et al., 1985; Press, 1988; Thorner and Vance, 1988; Strobl and Thomas, 1994)

The Impact of Diluted Detergents on Escherichia coli K12 (JM109)

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of diluted detergents namely, Clorox, Dettol and Aganol against Escherichia coli K12 (JM109), at different concentrations. Frequent usage of diluted detergents and disinfectants without knowing their effectiveness in killing microbes can act as a medium for infections in susceptible hosts. Moreover, it is known that the regular application of diluted detergents and disinfectants may actually cause antibiotic resistance. The efficacy of diluted detergents is determined by the minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) and the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) using tube dilution assay. The susceptibility test is conducted using the disc diffusion technique. Dettol and Clorox exhibited effective bacteriostatic agents where the MIC is 0.75%. The lowest concentration of Dettol and Clorox required to kill E. coli K12 (JM109) or MBC is at the concentration of 3.0% and 5.0%, respectively. Aganol showed less effective bacteriostatic and bactericidal agents, where it required higher MIC of 1.25% and MBC of 10%. The susceptibility test indicated that the Clorox is the most effective antibacterial agent with the minimum inhibition zone of 7 mm at a concentration of 1.75%. Higher concentrations of Dettol and Aganol (of 10% and 20%, respectively) are needed to exhibit the antibacterial activity with the minimum inhibition zone of 7 mm

An Optimized Ship Hull Fitting Approach Using NURBS

    Get PDF
Ship hull form module is the main module in ship design. The problem of creating fair ship hull surface is of major importance in Computer Aided Ship Design environment. The fitness of these surfaces is generally considered a subjective notion depending on the judgment of the designers (eg. visually pleasing, devoid of unnecessary bumps or wiggles, satisfying certain continuity requirements). One of the restriction in ship hull design is that the existing details of a ship design on paper or a ship that already been constructed physically couldn’t be reconstructed accurately and concisely in a ship hull design software. This problem can take on many different characteristics, depending on the goal of the reconstruction, the origin of the offset, and tools or methods available to tackle the job. All of these must be taken into account in developing the best approach to solving the problem in the most efficient manner. In the field of surface modeling of hull form, geometric complexity of hull form gives many difficulties. This leads to the issue of what is the best surface reconstruction method for ship hull? This research strives to solve this problem by creating fair ship hull surface using NURBS. An optimized ship hull fitting approach using NURBS is developed. Evaluation and analysis (percentage of accuracy, fairness and speed of processing) on the proposed approach and also comparison of proposed approach and other systems/softwares will be done

Case teaching method: institutional-level experience and development of measurement tool

    No full text
Much has been written about the case method, also known as the case-based teaching (CBT) as a teaching pedagogy. Most commonly adopted in the realm of business studies, the method is rather innovative when applied in other disciplines. The aim of this paper is to share policy-making and implementation experience of one of the public universities in Malaysia in embedding the case method into the teaching of its undergraduate academic programs. This paper also describes development of a tool to measure the effectiveness of the case method in terms of its role in inculcating participants’ generic skills. Contribution of this paper is twofold. Firstly, it describes adoption of this method at an institutional level (compared to individual level, self-reflection of instructors commonly found in the literature). Secondly, the paper is useful for instructors who plan to use the method in their teaching or/and to evaluate its effectiveness to the development of generic skills

Development Of A Malaysian Ocean Wave Database And Models For Engineering Purposes

    Get PDF
Correct wave data is a very important input to predict the performances of the marine vehicles and structures at preliminary design stages particularly regarding safety, effectiveness and comfort of passengers and crews. Presently, available wave data in Malaysian seas are based on visual observations from ships, oil platforms and limited wave buoys whose accuracy, reliability and comprehensiveness are often questioned. This study presents an effort to derive a more reliable and comprehensive wave database for Malaysian sea areas using satellite altimetry. Significant wave height, wind speed and sigma0 data is extracted from oceanographic satellite TOPEX/Poseidon for selected area. Results are presented in the form of probability distribution functions and compared to data from Global Wave Statistics (GWS), Malaysian Meteorological Service (MMS), Petronas Research Scientific Services (PRSS) and United State National Data Buoy Center (NDBC). This project has shown that the data provided by TOPEX/Poseidon satellite can be used to derive wave periods and the results indicate that the Hwang Method was the best approach to derive wave period for Malaysian ocean data

Presentation and validation of remote sensing ocean wave data

The use of satellite wave altimetry has increased the possibility of getting better temporal and spatial coverage of wave data collection. Whilst the method to obtain wave heights is well established, such is not the case with methods of derivations of wave periods. This study presents a review of four available methods to derive wave periods and describes the implementation of such methods to obtain Malaysian ocean waves joint probabilities of wave heights and wave periods data from TOPEX/Poseidon satellite altimetry. Data is presented in formats similar to the commonly used Global Wave Statistics. Comparisons are made with measured data from a petroleum company offshore platform. Results indicate that two methods produced almost identical wave periods data to the measured data
